What are UU's doing with video?

This page lists a sampling of the UU videos that presently exist. Some are on YouTube. Others are available from congregations.

A number of individuals, congregations and districts are working on UU video projects. This is a fabulous! But we still need more people working on this. Below is a sampling of some of the videos already out there. May these inspire you to get started!

A prayer for UU videos...

May all UU videos be filled with proper lighting.
May their sound be recorded well.
May they be downloaded and shared with ease.
May they be good or great, not crappy.

Thanks to Rev. Marlin Lavanhar for advancing our movement through high quality video that the rest of us can use. My wife (Rev. Amy Freedman) used this series with discussion groups held after the Sunday service. People came, watched one segment, then discussed. Very nice! It spares someone from presenting content, you just need a qualified facilitator.

I produced this video with my wife, Amy, exploring misconceptions people have about our faith. At General Assebly we filmed interviews with UU's from across our association. The youtube version of this video is below. Still need to do more with the additional footage.

Voices of a Liberal Faith - Unitarian Universalists
Unitarian Universalist Association

Description from youtube page:

Welcome to Unitarian Universalism! This newly-released video tells the story of our faith through powerful imagery and inspirational testimonials. In it, you'll see and hear Unitarian Universalist leaders and members share elements of our history, our theology, what it's like to worship with us, how we educate our children, and more. You'll also learn about our deep commitment to social justice and inclusiveness.

Why I am a Unitarian Universalist PART 1 and 2

Youth and young adults from the First Unitarian Church of Baltimore explain why they are Unitarian Universalists and what they believe. First of Two Parts.

Web Welcome Videos, Sermon Videos and Beyond

Some congregations are starting to add basic welcome messages. A great way to reach people. For those who might feel anxious about going to church for the first time ever, this can help get them through the door. Others are video taping and posting sermon messages.
Need someone to produce your congregation's video(s) or consulting help to get started on your own? Give me a buzz. Below are some examples.

Unitarian Universalist Church of Berkeley

They have a whole page of videos. I like that they use YouTube so they can be shared.
See http://www.uucb.org/videos/

Jefferson Unitarian Church
http://www.jeffersonunitarian.org

This congregation is working hard on their video messages.

Question: Why not post them on YouTube so we can easily share them. Why make people go hunting for them when you can subscribe to a YouTube Channel??? Something to ponder. NOTE that I think Peter Morales is a beautifully visionary UU.

First Unitarian Church of Albuquerque
http://uuabq.org/

Ready for iministry? This church is. Take a look at how the Rev. Christine Robinson and UUABQ is sharing there messages -- video, audio, PDF. Heck, they do everything short of driving church to your living room. Take a look at their podcast page (video, audio, text)

Christine will be leading a workshop at General Assembly (June 2007) on their iministry program.

Sharing Our Stories for ALL TO HEAR

Check out this one from the All Souls Church in New York. It is posted on YouTube with the tags (keywords): new orleans clean up. It shows up on page two when you search for "new orleans clean up" -- yes! Put our story out there not in the UU section, but where life is happening, where the #%!$ is going down. Let people know what we are doing. Of course you gotta get up off your buutocks first.

Wow! Did you know about this project? I just found it searching for UU videos... - PB

Not sure how I feel about Second Life. Just note that people are using it as a relational tool. For others it is a community. Others still - like me - it is a tempting way to not work on my to do list. If you want to visit the First Unitarian Universalist Church of Second Life? You can teleport there now using this link. You'll need a Second Life account - it will walk you through the steps. Still working on your FIRST life? You can look at their website and skip the teleporting... They've had to expand their church do to the demand. How long until it becomes an offical member of the UUA?

And last, but not least, the ever so popular ALIEN HELPER video...

"Save The Planet"
I've heard about this video more than any other out there. It has been emailed to me by friends and colleagues. I've over heard conversations about it. It has gotten rave reviews as well as harsh rants complaining that it is pathetic that this is one of the most widely viewed UU movies out there. I agree. AND I made it. Yes, it was an experiment on viral videos. Read more...

A non-youtube free standing copy of this video has been made available for download. "Buy" the digital download for $3. This token donation goes to my puppet, fairtrade coffee and video equipment fund. ;-)
