Surfing
the Edge of Chaos : The Laws of Nature and the New Laws
of Business
Essential for UU's interested in changing the culture
of the UUA. Great intro text on looking at organizations
as living systems of human beings. Guest what folks,
our association of UU congregations is alive. The UUA
is a human living system. Understand living systems
and organizational change/culture better and you can
do more to advance our movement.
The authors Pascale, Millemann, and Gioja argue that
business is a living system and therefore the four cornerstone
principles of the life sciences apply to them. These
four principles are:
1.
Equilibrium is death.
2. Innovation usually takes place on the edge of chaos.
3. Self-organization and emergence occur naturally.
4. Organizations can only be disturbed, not directed.

Marketing
Some
of the most helpful books we've read on transforming churches
and sharing our faith are from the marketing world. The
books in this section are recommended reading on marketing
and organizational change for Unitarian Universalists. If
you want to revolutionize our faith, our association/administration,
and share what we have with millions of people start with
these titles. If you do, contact us and let us know what
you think, We'd love to hear from you.

Unleashing
the Idea Virus
Want to grow our movement? Learn how ideas spread.
Unitarian Universalism has many things working against
it. A long name. A meaningless abbreviation of that
name. Too many principles. Members who don't get what
we are about or at least fail to communicate it. We
have to completely change how we communicate the "IDEA"
of Unitarian Universalism.
Amazon.com Review:
Treat a product or service like a human or computer
virus, contends online promotion specialist Seth
Godin, and it just might become one. In Unleashing
the Ideavirus, Godin describes ways to set any viable
commercial concept loose among those who are most
likely to catch it--and then stand aside as these
recipients become infected and pass it on to others
who might do the same. "The future belongs to
marketers who establish a foundation and process where
interested people can market to each other,"
he writes. "Ignite consumer networks and then
get out of the way and let them talk."

Purple
Cow: Transform Your Business by Being Remarkable
Working with the Uncommon Denomination marketing campaign
of the UUA? This is a must read. In fact, read this
before you even look at their resources. Many people
want to jump into media campaigns without doing the
internal work of the programs first tier. Read Purple
Cow and you'll get how we have to fundamentally change
our congregations and their cultures if we are to
successfully share our faith.
This
book discusses how a business, organization ,religion
-- whatever -- must be remarkable, that is, WORTH
TALKING ABOUT, in order to hold on to its share of
the marketplace. UUism is losing ground in our modern,
Internet and book driven spiritual marketplace.
What
is your church doing that is so different from others?
Sure, you're trying to pull together a diverse group.
But are you transforming lives? When people go to
work on Monday, what are they going to be compelled
to tell their colleagues about.
If
your congregation isn't growing then people aren't
sharing their experiences at your congregations with
the people they care about. No growth. Nothing remarkable.
No Purple Cow.
